PermaPeople: Mitch Kendall, Quality Control Manager
At the forefront of new product development is Mitch Kendall, QSI's Quality Control Manager. Known as the "Nutty Professor", Mitch is continually looking for ways to give PermaCrete Dealers superior products for a distinctive edge in the marketplace and provide them with more profits. When discussing PermaCrete's pre-colored Matrix Mix, Mitch gets really excited: "We blend the color pigments right into the bag mixes. There's no one in the industry that will give you nearly ANY color that you want in a cement-based bag mix. This is a HUGE advantage, especially in the vertical marketplace; none of our competitors come close to offering this variety and versatility! In horizontal applications, many Dealers have used the pre-colored Matrix to complete their decorative overlay patterns. For a brick paver look, for example, they use a gray, pre-colored Matrix to create the grout color, and then use a dark red mix to create the brick paver - fast, simple and very cost effective". "We then make a PermaStain Sealer to match the colored Matrix. That will create a consistent color throughout the application. We've found this to be a very big selling point in the marketplace".  Why was a new epoxy (PermaPoxy Enamel) developed when the old one was so good? "First, both the new epoxy and the old one are formulated with 100% solids. That's the most important thing to look for when judging good epoxies from bad ones - there are lots of inferior epoxies out there". "The other main reason for re-formulating the PermaPoxy was to join the "Green" movement that is gaining lots of steam. We feel that the US and state governments will implement and enforce tighter regulations for VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds). Our new formulation is water-borne (versus solvent-borne in the previous formulation) which complies with even the most stringent VOC regulations". "What is really great is that the new formulation offers improved gloss and chemical resistance. Our old PermaPoxy was top-notch, and I didn't think it was possible to improve on it. But we did"!! What's next Professor? "A new waterbase PermaThane that's VOC compliant and easy to install inside or outside. And, it's available in almost ANY color" Hey Mitch - how did you get so good at this stuff? "I've always been into Harley Davidson motorcycles. I started working on custom-painting them as a teenager and, through a lot of trial and error, I became pretty good at it; you have to! Some of the Harley owners I dealt with don't take too kindly at having their "ride" messed with. You might not be around to get a second chance in that business! That's why I work so hard to "get it right" the first time in the formulations and products I develop at PermaCrete". |
